The Faugni, large bundles of burning reeds, get their name from the Latin fauni ignis, meaning 'Faun fires'. This tradition dates back to pre-Christian times, when fires were lit to celebrate the winter solstice and invoke the return of light. With the advent of Christianity, this ancient practice merged with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, preserving its timeless spirit.
The heart of the celebration is the procession of the Faugni, which winds through the alleys of the historic centre, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere. The streets of Atri come alive with markets, music and performances, offering an enthralling experience for all participants.
