Campo Imperatore Plateau
The Little Tibet, heart of the massif of the Gran Sasso d'Italia
Campo Imperatore is a boundless plateau, the largest in the Apennines, extending between 1,500 and 1,900 metres above sea level, completely enclosed in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
Think of a place that reminds you of a little Tibet, as the naturalist Fosco Maraini noted, a natural setting for commercials, music videos and many wonderful movies, from ‘The Desert of the Tartars’ to ‘The Name of the Rose’ to the entire ‘Trinity’ series with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. A place where the sky opens wide and the only thing delimiting it are the mountain peaks.
There is no need to imagine it, it exists for real.
Endless pastures alternating with rocky areas create an impressive and varied landscape. Here, nature reigns supreme, with extraordinarily unique flora and fauna. Among the plants are species of Nordic origin and typical of the Eurasian steppe, while among the wildlife you can come across the Orsini viper, a rare and protected species that is totally harmless to humans.
The plateau is crossed by many paths, ideal for hiking, cycling or horseback riding. In winter, when the snow covers everything in white, Campo Imperatore turns into a paradise for cross-country skiers and winter sports lovers.
A magical place, where time seems to stand still, where you can breathe pure air and enjoy breathtaking views. A true Abruzzo jewel, which will not disappoint nature and adventure lovers.
